UFPB to host the 1st International Online Ethnobiology Meeting in September

The 1st International Online Ethnobiology Meeting will occur from September 21 to 25 and will also host the 2nd UFPB Ethnobiology Workshop.

The aim of this initiative is to strengthen Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology at UFPB. The 1st  International Online Ethnobiology Meeting is organized by the Laboratory of Ethnobiology and Environmental Sciences (LECA-UFPB) – Department of Systematics and Ecology, with the support of the UNIESP University Center, the Laboratory of Ecology and Evolution of Social-Ecological Systems (UFPE), the Brazilian Society of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology, and the UFPB Agency for International Cooperation (ACI).

The event will take place online and experts from 8 different countries will present lectures:

  • Trayectoria y perspectivas de la etnobiología en México (History and perspectives of ethnobiology in Mexico) - Prof. Dr. Alejandro Casas (Mexico)
  • Why the east should follow Latin America’s example in ethnobiology - Prof. Dr. Merlin Franco (Brunei)
  • La biodiversidad de la chacra andina como sustento alimentar y medicinal (The biodiversity of the Andean farm as medicine and food sustenance - Prof. Dr. Jesus Aranguren (Ecuador)
  • Etnobotánica aplicada a las nuevas pedagogías del sur (Ethnobotanics applied to the new southern pedagogies - Profa. Dra. Olga Lucía Sanabria Diago (Colombia)
  • El rol de la mujer y su conocimiento tradicional en la seguridade (The role of women and their traditional knowledge in safety)  - Profa. Dra. Narel Y. Paniagua-Zambrana (Bolivia)
  • Ethnobiological studies in a world of the Nagoya Protocol and post SARS-CoV2 - Prof. Dr. Rainer W Bussmann (Georgia)
  • Etnobiologia em Centros Urbanos (Ethnobiology in Urban Centers) - Profa. Dra. Ana Haydeé Ladio (Argentina)
  • Percepción y conocimiento local de servicios ecosistémicos de los bosques secos (Local knowledge and perception of the ecosystemic services of dry forests) – Profa. Dra. Ángeles La Torre Cuadros (Peru)

According to the organization of the event, all presentations will be subtitled in English and there will be a translator for questions and answers in English and Spanish. All this to facilitate the understanding for international participants, since the event already has registrants from more than 25 different countries.

The workshop and international meeting are target on undergraduate and postgraduate students, professors and researchers from public and private institutions, whether national or international, dedicated to teaching and/or research. The whole program will be streamed live on Youtube, through the channel of Prof. Dr. Reinaldo Lucena, the coordinator of LECA and president of the organizing committee of the Meeting.
